What are the Nova Scotia Boating License requirements?

If operating a power-driven boat or a PWC in Nova Scotia you are required to have a boating license (Pleasure Craft Operator Card). 

In Nova Scotia, there is no minimum age to obtain your boating license (Pleasure Craft Operator Card) but there are horsepower restrictions for anyone under 16 years of age operating a boat.

You do not need to be a resident of Nova Scotia or Canada to take the MyBoatCard.com® free boating safety course or to obtain a boating license in Nova Scotia.

All boat operators must carry their boating license with them at all times when boating in Nova Scotia. Failure to have your Pleasure Craft Operator Card with you when boating could result in a fine of $250.

The PCOC is proof of competency. It proves that you have been educated in how to safely operate a boat or PWC in Nova Scotia and Canada. You can obtain a PCOC by completing the free MyBoatCard.com® online boating safety course and passing the final Transport Canada exam.

Who needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)?

Anybody who operates a motorized boat or PWC in Nova Scotia must have a proof of competency regardless of your age, engine horsepower or length of boat. The most common proof of competency in Nova Scotia is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (boating license). Proof of competency is basically a proof of boating education.

Even if your boat is equipped with an electric trolling motor or a motor less than 10hp, you need a boating license. The fine for operating a boat without a Pleasure Craft Operator Card in Nova Scotia is $250.

Non-residents of Canada must also show proof of competency if they operate a craft that is registered in Canada or operate a motorized craft on Canadian waters for more than 44 consecutive days.

The Canada Shipping Act, 2001 is the principal legislation governing safety of marine transportation and recreational boating, as well as protection of the marine environment in Nova Scotia.

Boating and Alcohol in Nova Scotia

The consumption of alcohol while operating a boat in Nova Scotia is illegal, the same rules that apply to drinking and driving in Nova Scotia apply. You can be fined a minimum of $230 or imprisoned. The only time alcohol may be consumed by the passengers on a boat in Nova Scotia is if the boat has a sleeping area, cooking facilities, toilet or is docked.

Fines:
$230 – if drinking alcohol on a boat that does not have a sleeping area, cooking facilities or toilet.

Operating a boat while impaired:
1st time offence: Minimum $1,000 fine, minimum 7 days’ imprisonment
2nd time offence: Minimum $1,000 fine, minimum 30 days’ imprisonment
3rd time offence: Minimum $1,000 fine, minimum 120 days’ imprisonment.

Do all boat operators in Nova Scotia need a boating license?

Youths less than 16 years of age may not operate boats in Nova Scotia with motors over certain horsepower limits unless someone 16 years of age or older, and certified, is directly supervising them from inside the boat.

You must be 16 years of age or older to operate a PWC / jet ski in Nova Scotia.

What happens if I lose my Nova Scotia boating license?
