How do I get my boating license in BC?

To get your boating license in British Columbia :

Do I need a boating license in BC?

Yes. Anybody who operates a motorized boat or PWC in British Columbia must have proof of competency regardless of your age, engine horsepower or length of the boat. The most common proof of competency in BC is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

Even if your boat is equipped with an electric trolling motor or a motor less than 10hp, you need a boating license. The fine for operating a boat without a Pleasure Craft Operator Card in BC is $250.

How long does it take to get your boating license in BC?

It takes on average 3-5 hours to get your boater license in BC, including completing the online course and passing the exam. After successfully completing the course and exam, you will be issued your Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC).

How much is the BC boating license?

A BC boating license costs $39 CAD. This fee covers the cost of the Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) and the exam. After completing the online course and paying the fee, you will be given access to the Transport Canada boating safety exam. Once you have successfully passed this test, you will be issued a BC boater license.

 

What is the fine for driving a boat without a license in BC?

The fine for driving a boat without having a Pleasure Craft Operator Card with you in BC, is $250.

Is the BC boating exam hard?

No, the BC boating exam is not hard. The Transport Canada approved boating course covers everything you need to know to pass your online boating exam. 

The exam is open-book and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. The passing score is 75% (38 out of 50). If you fail don’t worry you can retake the exam. Your one-time fee includes unlimited exam retries and unlimited access to the online course material.

 

Can I still get the Pleasure Craft Operator Card if I don't have an BC driver's license?

Yes, you do not need to have a BC driving license in order to get a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

Do I have to be a resident of BC to take the boating safety course?

No, you do not have to be a resident of BC to take the online boating safety course.

Can you drive a boat without a license in BC?

No, you need to have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card or another proof of competency to drive a boat in BC.

What age do I need to be to get a boating license in BC?

There is no minimum age for obtaining a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. As long as you are old enough to take the online boating safety course and pass the online exam you are old enough to get a boater license in BC. Remember, your license never expires!

Are there age and horsepower restrictions in BC?

In BC, horsepower restrictions apply to operators under 16 years of age. Youths less than 16 years of age may not operate a boat in BC with motors over certain horsepower limits unless someone 16 years of age or older, and certified, is directly supervising them from inside the boat.

You must be 16 years of age or older to operate a PWC / jet ski in BC.

Is the BC boater license valid in all other Canadian provinces?

Your Pleasure Craft Operator Card is valid in all Canadian provinces and territories.

How long does it take to receive my boating license in BC?

You will receive your temporary Transport Canada Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) immediately after you passed the boating safety exam. The course and exam take on average 3-5 hours to complete. You can print your temporary BC boating license at home and go boating in BC right away. The temporary PCOC expires 60 days from the date you passed the test.

What happens if I lose my BC boater license?
