What are the BC Boating License requirements?
If operating a power-driven boat or a PWC in British Columbia you are required to have a boating license (Pleasure Craft Operator Card).
In British Columbia, there is no minimum age to obtain your boating license (Pleasure Craft Operator Card) but there are horsepower restrictions for anyone under 16 years of age operating a boat.
You do not need to be a resident of British Columbia or Canada to take the MyBoatCard.com® free boating safety course or to obtain a boating license in BC.

What is a BC Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)?
The PCOC is proof of competency. It proves that you have been educated in how to safely operate a boat or PWC in both British Columbia and Canada. You can obtain a PCOC in BC by completing the free MyBoatCard.com® online boating safety course and passing the final Transport Canada exam.
Who needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) in British Columbia?
Anybody who operates a motorized boat or PWC in BC must have a proof of competency regardless of your age, engine horsepower or length of boat. The most common proof of competency in BC is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (boating license). Proof of competency is basically a proof of boating education.
Even if your boat is equipped with an electric trolling motor or a motor less than 10hp, you need a boating license. The fine for operating a boat without a Pleasure Craft Operator Card in British Columbia is $250.
Non-residents of Canada must also show proof of competency if they operate a craft that is registered in Canada or operate a motorized craft on Canadian waters for more than 44 consecutive days.
Is the BC Pleasure Craft Operator Card and a BC Boating License the same thing?
The BC PCOC and BC boating license are pretty much the same thing, except the BC PCOC is good for life and never expires, hence why it is not called a license.

Boating and Alcohol in British Columbia
The consumption of alcohol while operating a boat in British Columbia is illegal, the same rules that apply to drinking and driving in British Columbia apply. You can be fined a minimum of $230 or imprisoned. The only time alcohol may be consumed by the passengers on a boat in British Columbia is if the boat has a sleeping area, cooking facilities, toilet or is docked.

Operating a boat while impaired:
1st time offence: Minimum $1,000 fine, minimum 7 days’ imprisonment
2nd time offence: Minimum $1,000 fine, minimum 30 days’ imprisonment
3rd time offence: Minimum $1,000 fine, minimum 120 days’ imprisonment.

Are there age and horsepower restrictions in British Columbia?
In British Columbia, horsepower restrictions apply to operators under 16 years of age. Youths less than 16 years of age may not operate boats in British Columbia with motors over certain horsepower limits unless someone 16 years of age or older, and certified, is directly supervising them from inside the boat.
You must be 16 years of age or older to operate a PWC / jet ski in British Columbia.
