CARD FAQ

CARD
FAQ

What is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)?

The PCOC is proof of competency. It proves that you have been educated in how to safely operate a boat. You can obtain a PCOC by completing our free Transport Canada approved online boating safety course and passing the final Transport Canada exam.

Who needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) in Canada?

Anybody who operates a motorized boat in Canada must have a proof of competency, regardless of your age, engine horsepower or length of boat. The most common proof of competency in Canada is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (boating license). Proof of competency is basically a proof of boating education.

Even if your boat is equipped with an electric trolling motor or a motor less than 10hp, you need a boating license. The fine for operating a boat without a Pleasure Craft Operator Card in Canada is $250.Non-residents must also show proof of competency if they operate a craft that is registered in Canada or operate a motorized craft on Canadian waters for more than 44 consecutive days.

Is the Pleasure Craft Operator Card and a Boating License the same thing?

The PCOC and boating license are pretty much the same thing, except the PCOC is good for life and never expires, hence why it is not called a license.

Can I still get the Pleasure Craft Operator Card if I don’t have a driver's license?

Yes, you do not need to have a driver’s license in order to get a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

What are the Transport Canada Requirements for the PCOC?

There is no minimum age requirement to take this online course. You do not have to be a resident of Canada to take this online course.
