Boating License PCOC

What is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)?

The Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is a form of proof that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to safely operate a boat. You can get your PCOC by completing our free Transport Canada approved online boating safety course and passing the final Transport Canada exam. By having a PCOC, you can demonstrate to others that you have been properly trained and are competent in boating safety.

Who needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) in Canada?

In Canada, all operators of motorized boats must have a proof of competency, regardless of their age, the horsepower of the engine, or the length of the boat. The most common form of proof of competency is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC), also known as a boating license. This certification demonstrates that the operator has received proper boating education and has the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate a motorized boat.
Even if your boat has an electric trolling motor or a motor with less than 10 horsepower, you are required to have a PCOC. If you are caught operating a boat without a PCOC in Canada, you could be fined $250.Non-residents must also show proof of competency if they operate a craft that is registered in Canada or operate a motorized craft on Canadian waters for more than 44 consecutive days. This requirement applies to all operators, regardless of their nationality or the location of the boat.

Is the Pleasure Craft Operator Card and a Boating License the same thing?

The Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) and boating license are essentially the same thing. They both demonstrate that the operator has received proper boating education and has the knowledge and skills necessary to safely operate a motorized boat. The main difference is that the PCOC never expires and is valid for life, while a traditional license typically has an expiration date and must be renewed periodically. Because the PCOC does not expire, it is not technically considered a license. However, it serves a similar purpose and is often referred to as a boating license by many people.

Can I still get the Pleasure Craft Operator Card if I don’t have a driver's license?

You do not need to have a driver’s license to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). The PCOC is a separate certification that demonstrates your competency in operating a motorized boat. It is not related to your driver’s license or any other form of transportation-related certification. As long as you are old enough to complete the online boating safety course and pass the Transport Canada PCOC exam, you are eligible to get your PCOC.

What are the Transport Canada Requirements for the PCOC?

There is no minimum age requirement to take this online boating safety course. It is open to people of all ages who are interested in learning about boating safety and obtaining a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC).You do not have to be a resident of Canada to take this online course. The course is available to anyone, regardless of their location or nationality.

Boating License PCOC
Canada is the ultimate boating destination. As the second largest country in the world, Canada boasts an impressive 202,080 km of coastline, making it a paradise for boaters. With a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC), Canadian boaters have endless options for where to explore by boat. In fact, Canada is home to 50% of the world’s natural lakes, with a total of 31,752 lakes covering 9% of the country’s surface. This gives boaters plenty of opportunities to discover the beauty and diversity of Canada’s waterways.

BOATING.
LAWS.

The Canada Shipping Act, 2001 is the main law that regulates marine transportation and recreational boating in Canada. It also protects the marine environment.

Under the act, all boat operators must have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card or another form of proof of competency. This demonstrates that they have the necessary knowledge and skills to safely operate a pleasure craft and are aware of the applicable rules and regulations. The purpose of obtaining a proof of competency is to reduce the number of boating-related accidents and deaths.
