How do I get my boating license in Ontario?

To get your boating license in Ontario :

Do I need a boating license in Ontario?

What are the Ontario Boating License requirements?

If operating a power-driven boat or a PWC in Ontario you are required to have a boating license (Pleasure Craft Operator Card).

In Ontario, there is no minimum age to obtain your boating license (Pleasure Craft Operator Card) but there are horsepower restrictions for anyone under 16 years of age operating a boat.

You do not need to be a resident of Ontario or Canada to take the MyBoatCard.com® free boating safety course or to obtain a boating license in Ontario.

All boat operators must carry their boating license with them at all times when boating in Ontario. Failure to have your Pleasure Craft Operator Card with you when boating could result in a fine of $250.

What is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)?

The PCOC is proof of competency. It proves that you have been educated in how to safely operate a boat or PWC in Ontario and Canada. You can obtain a PCOC by completing the free MyBoatCard.com® online boating safety course and passing the final Transport Canada exam.

Who needs a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)?

Anybody who operates a motorized boat or PWC in Ontario must have a proof of competency regardless of your age, engine horsepower or length of boat. The most common proof of competency in Ontario is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (boating license). Proof of competency is basically a proof of boating education.

Even if your boat is equipped with an electric trolling motor or a motor less than 10hp, you need a boating license. The fine for operating a boat without a Pleasure Craft Operator Card in Ontario is $250.

Non-residents of Canada must also show proof of competency if they operate a craft that is registered in Canada or operate a motorized craft on Canadian waters for more than 44 consecutive days.

Can I still get the Pleasure Craft Operator Card if I don’t have an Ontario driver's license?

Yes, you do not need to have a driver’s license in order to get a Pleasure Craft Operator Card.

Do I have to be a resident of Ontario to take the free boating safety course?

No, you do not have to be a resident of Ontario to take the free online boating safety course.

The Canada Shipping Act, 2001 is the principal legislation governing safety of marine transportation and recreational boating, as well as protection of the marine environment in Ontario.

Boating and Alcohol in Ontario

The consumption of alcohol while operating a boat in Ontario is illegal, the same rules that apply to drinking and driving in Ontario apply. You can be fined a minimum of $230 or imprisoned. The only time alcohol may be consumed by the passengers on a boat in Ontario is if the boat has a sleeping area, cooking facilities, toilet or is docked.

Fines:
$230 – if drinking alcohol on a boat that does not have a sleeping area, cooking facilities or toilet.

Operating a boat while impaired:
1st time offence: Minimum $1,000 fine, minimum 7 days’ imprisonment
2nd time offence: Minimum $1,000 fine, minimum 30 days’ imprisonment
3rd time offence: Minimum $1,000 fine, minimum 120 days’ imprisonment.

Do all boat operators in Ontario need a boating license?

What age do I need to be to get a boating license in Ontario?

There is no minimum age for obtaining a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. As long as you are old enough to take the online boating safety course and pass the online exam you are old enough to get a boating license in Ontario. Remember, your boating license never expires!

Are there age and horsepower restrictions in Ontario?

In Ontario, horsepower restrictions apply to operators under 16 years of age. Youths less than 16 years of age may not operate boats in Ontario with motors over certain horsepower limits unless someone 16 years of age or older, and certified, is directly supervising them from inside the boat.

You must be 16 years of age or older to operate a PWC / jet ski in Ontario.

Is the Ontario boating license valid in all other Canadian provinces?

Your Pleasure Craft Operator Card (boating license) is valid in all Canadian provinces and territories.

What happens if I lose my Ontario boating license?

If you lose your PCOC, simply give us a call on 1800 886 5303 to order a replacement card. We will send you a temporary card to print immediately so you can go boating right away. Your replacement PCOC will be shipped out to you within 48 hours.

What’s the Ontario boating safety course all about?
