Can you operate a boat without a license in Canada?

Other proofs of competency that are valid in Canada include:

  • A completed and signed boat rental safety checklist (applicable only for the rental period); or

What is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card?

A Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC), often referred to as a Canadian Boating License — is a federal competency card given to Canadian boaters once they successfully complete a Transport Canada -accredited boating safety course and PCOC exam. The PCOC is a valid in all Canadian provinces and territories.

Exemptions : Individuals operating a boat in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, and non-residents using their pleasure craft in Canadian waters for less than 45 consecutive days, are not required to have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card or other proof of competency, while operating a motorized pleasure craft.

Do I have to carry my boating license with me on the boat?

Yes, it is a legal requirement to carry your boating license, also known as a Pleasure Craft Operator Card, with you on the boat. If you are stopped by a law enforcement officer and cannot present your boating license or another recognized proof of competency, you may be fined $250.

If carrying a Pleasure Craft Operator Card as proof of competency, the original card must be carried on board. Photocopies or electronic copies of the card will not be accepted.

Can you get a temporary boating license in Canada?
