The fastest way to get a replacement Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is to contact the boating license provider that you originally passed your boating license exam with and obtained your PCOC from.

Please note that only course providers that are currently accredited by Transport Canada are permitted to issue replacement cards.

 

2. Contact Transport Canada

If you did not originally pass the boating license test with MyBoatCard.com or if the company you did pass it with is no longer in business or you can’t remember which company you got it from – you will need to contact Transport Canada and ask them to provide you with an Authorization Letter.

You can contact Transport Canada by phone or email to request your authorization letter.

Once you have received this Authorization Letter, simply click here and upload your Authorization Letter along with the following information and we will be able to issue you a replacement card:

  • Your name
  • Your DOB
  • Your shipping address where you would like the replacement card(s) sent to
  • The number of replacement cards you would like

Do boating licenses expire in Alberta?

No, your boating license (PCOC) never expires in Alberta. It is good for life and valid nationwide. There are no annual fees.

Can you drive a boat without a license in Alberta?

Alberta Boating LicenseNo, you need to have a boating license (Pleasure Craft Operator Card) or another proof of competency to drive a boat in Alberta.

Anybody who operates a motorized boat or PWC in Alberta must have proof of competency regardless of your age, engine horsepower or length of the craft. Proof of competency is a document that certifies that an individual is aware of the fundamental principles of boating in Alberta and has the knowledge to operate a boat safely.

The most common proof of competency in Alberta is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC).

Even if your boat is equipped with an electric trolling motor or a motor less than 10hp, you need a boaters license (PCOC).

What is the fine for driving a boat without a license in Alberta?

The minimum fine for operating a boat without a license (or other proof of competency) in Alberta is $250. 

Can you get a temporary boat license in Alberta?

Yes, you will get a temporary boat license in Alberta once you have completed the online boating safety course and passed the Transport Canada boating exam. You will be issued with a temporary boating license (PCOC) which you can print at home and go boating straight away.

The temporary PCOC is valid for 60 days from the date of issue (the day you passed your Transport Canada exam).

Printing the temporary boaters license allows you to go boating straight away while you wait for your permanent Pleasure Craft Operator Card to arrive in the mail.

The temporary Pleasure Craft Operator Card is proof that you have passed the Transport Canada exam and can legally operate a pleasure craft in Alberta.
