What is a Canadian Boating License (PCOC)?
The PCOC is proof of competency. It proves that you have been educated in how to safely operate a boat or jet ski. You can obtain a PCOC by completing our free Transport Canada approved online boating safety course and passing the final Transport Canada exam.
Who needs a Boating License in Canada?
Anybody who operates a motorized boat or jet ski, in Canada must have a proof of competency, regardless of your age, engine horsepower or length of boat. The most common proof of competency in Canada is a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). Proof of competency is basically a proof of boating education.
Even if your boat or jet ski is equipped with an electric trolling motor or a motor less than 10hp, you need a boating license (PCOC). The fine for operating a boat without a Pleasure Craft Operator Card in Canada is $250.
Non-residents must also show proof of competency if they operate a craft that is registered in Canada or operate a motorized craft on Canadian waters for more than 44 consecutive days.
Can I still get the Canadian Boating License if I don’t have a driver's license?
Yes, you do not need to have a driver’s license in order to get a Canadian boating license.

Do all boat operators need a boating license in Canada?

How do I obtain a boating license?

Do I need a license to drive a Jet Ski?
Yes, a boating license (PCOC) is required to drive a jet ski. Even though a jet ski looks different from a boat the same rules apply, you need your Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) to operate a any power driven watercraft in Canada.
All PWC operators must carry their PCOC with them at all times when operating a sea-doo in Canada. Failure to have your Pleasure Craft Operator Card with you when jet skiing could result in a mimimum fine of $250.
